Definition:
Asherah was a Canaanite mother goddess who was associated with things like serpents and sacred
trees. In the Bible, the term asherah usually refers to some stylized tree made of wood used
to represent this goddess.
Although worship of such a goddess is usually condemned in the Bible, there is some evidence that devotion to her was, at times, widespread among the Israelites - even to the point that she was regarded as a sort of consort to their own god, Yahweh. More than once, an asherah is depicted as standing in the Temple in Jerusalem (2 Kings 18:4, 21:7) and the Temple also apparently had vessels dedicated to Asherah (2 Kings 23:4).
