Definition:
Agudath Israel is an organization established in Kattowicz, Poland in 1912 for the
purpose getting others to understand that the solution to all of life's problems is the
Torah - studying, following and living the Torah. A primary reason for the creation
of this organization was the growing influence of secular Jewish groups and political
parties, for example Zionism.
In the United States today the group serves to educate about and further the interests of Orthodox Judaism, principally through education. It provides a vital social outlet for ultra-orthodox Jews who refused to have any substantial context with the "outside world," secular and non-Jewish as it is. It has, however, lobbied congressional committees when it comes to issues like federal support for religious schools or government accommodation of religion, thus demonstrating an increasing willingness to engage the secular society.
