Definition:
In Islam, the act of ziyara involves a visit to any Muslim holy place,
especially the tomb of an important saint or theologian and most especially the tomb
of Muhammad, located in Medina. Not all Muslim theologians have approved of
ziyara, however. Some have regarded it as dangerously close to encouraging a
pious reverence which should be reserved for God alone. Others, like the Wahhabis,
treat it as simply another form of bida, or innovation, which is normally
forbidden - although this is one innovation which has proven popular enough that even
the more strict religious leaders are usually willing to let it pass.
