Definition:
Zamzam is the name of a sacred well in Mecca. It is also sometimes called the well of
Isam'il because it is believed that the angel Gabriel opened up the well to save
Hagar and her son from dying in the desert. Visiting Zamzam is an important part
of the hajj, or the pilgrimage to Mecca. Pilgrims hope to touch the waters
of Zamzam or, even better, dip in it some portion of the clothing which they will be
buried in.
