Definition: This literally means "custom" or "customary practice" but is used to refer specifically to the customs followed by Muhammad and, because of him, his immediate followers as reported in the hadith.

After Muhammad died, Muslims still had the revelation of the Qur'an, but had lost his personal authority and therefore needed something else to use for governing the community of believers. Thus, people came to rely on the customary practices he followed.
