Definition: When Muhammad died, Abu Bakr was chosen to take over the leadership of the Muslim community. However, many Bedouin tribes which had converted to Islam refused to recognize Bakr's leadership.

They regarded their allegiance to the Muslim community as having been a personal allegiance to Muhammad himself - when Muhammad died, so did their allegiance. Abu Bakr refused to accept this and launched the Wars of the Ridda, or wars of apostasy, in order to combat and defeat the many apostates who existed throughout the Arabian peninsula. Eventually, Bark was able to reimpose the authority of Islam under the leadership of Mecca.
