Definition: In Islam, a mashhad is a shrine. The term literally means "place of martyrdom," and such shrines usually are at places where someone has been martyred. This is not always the case, however, and the most important shrine in Islam is Muhammad's tomb in Medina. Many pilgrims on the Hajj to Mecca also visit this tomb afterwards.
