Definition: Muhammad Khatami was elected as the president of Iran in 1997 in landslide victory which indicated a strong desire among Iran's populace, especially young people, for greater liberalization in Iranian society. The Islamic Republic of Iran has been suffering from very difficult economic circumstances which has been exacerbated by the limited opportunities available to both women and young people - limitations which are imposed by religious authorities.

While in office, Khatami has worked hard to push reforms through the parliament and over the objections of religious traditionalists. Sometimes he has had success and sometimes he has failed. Through it all, however, the people who support reforms have generally continued to support him, regarding his failures as primarily the responsibilty of the religious conservatives and not any fault of his own.
