Definition: In the transmission of the hadith, each portion is validated by a chain of authorities, supposedly going back to Muhammad. The more secure and reliable the chain, the more authoritative the story is supposed to be. This chain is called the isnad, and usually this is relied upon more in validating hadith than any attempt to look at things like internal consistency.
