Name:
Hamas
Acronym for: Harakat-al-Muqawama al-Islamiyya
English: Islamic Resistance Movement.
History:
Founder: Sheikh Ahmad Yasin
Founded: 1987
Profile:
Hamas, a militant Palestinian group centered in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, is a
terrorist offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood in Lebanon. Founded in 1987, its primary goal
is not simply liberty for Palestinians as with other militant movements in the region, but
rather the total elimination of the state of Israel and its replacement with a
fundamentalist Islamic state for Palestinians. As a result of this extreme stance, it has
consistently opposed any peace negotiations between other Palestinian groups like Yassar
Arafat's PLO and Israeli authorities, even going so far as to launch terrorist operations
for the apparent purpose of sabotaging possible peace developing.
