Definition: Literally, this means "philosophy." In practice, it refers to the methods and content of Greek philosophy which were brought into Islam. A person who tries to interpret Islam though rationalist philosophy was called a faylasuf ("philosopher").
Traditionally, philosophy has been viewed with some suspicion in Islam because it was thought to be a competitor with, and thus a threat to, true religion. Thus, whenever philosophy has been actively cultivated it has often been done outside the mainstream orthodoxy.
