Definition:
The Babis are a Muslim sect which developed as part of Mahdi expectations among
Persian Shi'ites during the 19th century. The founder was Mirza 'Ali Muhammad
(1819-1950) who, in 1844, declared that he was the Bab, or "gateway" to the
Hidden Imam. He claimed that he would start a new cycle of divine revelations, repeating
the efforts Muhammad. After he was executed in 1850, a new leader (Baha'ullah) took
the group in a new direction and founded the religion known as Baha'i.
