Definition: According to the psychological theories of Freud and Lacan, whenever someone diverts the energy produced by some drive (like the drive for sex or anger) towards some other goal, that is the process of sublimation. Normally, the energy is believed to be diverted to some better or higher goal, like the production of art. Indeed, Freud argued that the whole of culture was a product of subliminated sexual urges.

It helps to know what, exactly, an argument is before you can critique one and tell what is wrong with it. Sometimes, people say they are making arguments when they are not!

How do you critique an argument?
Assuming that we have established that we have an actual argument, the next step is to examine it for validity. There are two points on which an argument might fail: its premises or its inferences.
