Biography:
Charles Sanders Pierce was an American philosopher whose work was instrumental in the development of the philosophy of pragmatism. However, he eventually renamed his own work "pragmaticism" because he disagreed with William James and other pragmatic philosophers in certain matters, like the definition of "truth."

Aside from his involvement with the development of pragmatism, he has also been described as the first American empirical psychologist. Pierce experimented on color vision difference thresholds. He was also the first psychologist elected to the National Academy of Sciences.
