Definition:
The doctrine of occasionalism is an attempt to solve a problem in the dualistic
beliefs about the mind and body: if the mind and the body are such two fundamentally
different substances, how is it that the two can interact?
Those who adopt occasionalism argue that they don't really interact. Instead, it only seems like they interact. When we will our bodies to do something, what actually causes our bodies to act is divine intervention - either immediate intervention or because the mind and body are regularly "synchronized" through divine action.
