Biography:
Joseph Lewis was an author, teacher, and advocate of atheism and freethought. Although he came from a Jewish background, he abandoned religion early in his life and became largely self-educated.

In the 1920s he became the president of Freethinkers of America, an organization which he helped incorporate in 1925. He established a new publishing house, Freethought Press Association, which he used to publish and distrubte a wide variety of freethought literature. He also wrote a great deal of freethought literature of his own, critiquing religion in general and a variety of religious dogmas.
