Biography:
Paul-Henri Thiry, more widely known as Baron d'Holbach, inherited a
fortune from his father and became known throughout France for his generosity to
philosophers and other intellectuals. It wasn't until after his death, however, that his
friends began to release his works under his own name and thus revealed his philosophy.
Holbach promoted an atheistic and materialistic philosophy of nature and an Epicurean moral philosophy. According to Holbach, society should be governed by enlightened and educated men who were not constrianed by the political and religious dogmas of the past.
