Definition: Generally speaking, the term historicism refers to the idea that the best way to understand social events, social institutions, and indeed society in general is through an analysis of their historical development. Thus, what a social thing is is based upon where it has come from, its history. The milder form of historicism simply argues that it is misleading to try and learn about society from a completely ahistorical perspecctive. A much stronger version of historicism, however, argues that historical developments actuall determine the final form of social structures and society itself.
