The term etiology simply means the "study of first things.". It is commonly
used as a label for stories which are supposed to explain origins, such as origins
of an ethnic group, a religion, or even of reality itself.
There is also what is known as the etiological argument, an argument for the existence of god more commonly called the cosmological argument and which starts from the assumption of the existence of a First Cause and works from there.
