Definition: A definition is any attempt to explain the meaning of a word. There are five major categories of definitions:
- stipulative
- lexical
- precising
- theoretical
- persuasive.
Definitions can also be separated into ostensible and verbal definitions. An ostensible definition involves simply pointing at whatever object is being referred to by the word in question. A verbal definition involves providing a linguistic description, as in the above list.
