Definition: As a school of Greek philosophy, Cynicism taught that the highest good of a human life was to fulfill basic, natural needs. As such, Cynics rejected the argument that humans needed to be concerned with social conventions and conformity. The term cynic comes form the Greek word for "dog-like," and the Cynics got their name because they "barked" at Greek society, attempting to get it to wake up and reconsider its assumptions and cultural norms.
