Biography:
Jacob Burckhardt was a Swiss historian who is primarily responsible for the
modern idea of a European Renaissance. In this seminal work The Civilization
of the Renaissance in Italy, he argued that European society experienced fundamental
shifts in the nature of how the individual related to society. Previous to that, people
were primarily members of a class or community; afterwards, they began to idealize
the concept of autonomous individuals.
