Definition: Popular during the 19th and early 20th centuries, the practice of anthropometry involves measuring parts of people's bodies for the purpose of classification and comparison. The most (in)famous aspect of this was the measurement of people's skulls in an effort to demonstrate that the skulls of certain races were smaller, thus meaning that those races were not as intelligent. It was also used to classify certain facial characteristics as belonging to naturally criminal people. When it is used today, it is normally for the purpose of charting children's growth or for assessing a person's health.
