Definition:
Amun was originally just a local god in the city of Thebes, but in the 16th century BCE
(the 18th dynasty), he was elevated to the position of a state-god and eventually assimilated
the powers of Re, becoming known as Amun-Re. This god was later set aside by the monotheistic
reforms of Akhenaten, possibly in an effort to eliminate the growing power of the priesthood.
