Definition:
Abstinence, which comes from the Latin abstinere, "to hold back," occurs when a person refuses to "indulge" in certain worldly or material pleasures, such as food, sex, or various form of entertainment. The idea is that such renunciation, even for a brief period of time, allows the person to focus on more important, spiritual needs.

When taken to an extreme, it results in asceticism, which is a total withdrawl from the world.
