Definition: The process of natural selection is one of the proposed mechanisms of evolutionary change. According to evolutionary theory, certain individuals are "selected" for because their genetic makeup causes them to do better in competition with other individuals. Thus, for whatever reasons, this individual is better able to survive by evading predators, getting more food, being more attractive to potential mates, etc. Such an individual will, over the course of a lifetime, produce more offspring, thus spreading his or her genetic information more widely in the population. In this fashion, over time, whatever benefits this individual had will also be possessed, to some degree, by more and more future members of the group.
