Definition: This term is commonly applied to the process of biological evolution because it was Charles Darwin who first provided a systematic description of how biological evolution might occur.
According to Darwin, the diversity of life is a result of natural proceses, not divine intervention. Individuals and species best adapted to their environments are those which survive best and reproduce the most, thus ensuring that their genes are spread the most through future generations.
This undermined traditional religious beliefs that all species were created invididuall and specially by a god with a purpose in mind.
