Definition: Catastrophism is a doctrine from the natural sciences which argues that the primary force in the history of changes on the Earth, geological and biological, as been catastrophes: floods, meteor strikes, etc. This is contrasted with the idea of uniformitarianism, which argues that while catstrophes do happen and can play an important role, they are not the sole and dominant force. Creationists are more likely to be catastrophists because great catastrophes are normally required to explain changes in the planet and biosphere in the relatively short periods of time which they believe that the planet has existed.
