History:
Yoshida Shinto is a Japanese religious movement which is primarily based upon
Shintoism, but which also draws important elements from Taoism, Buddhism and
Confucianism. The origins of this movement can be found in the work of Yoshida
Kanetomo (1435-1511) who summarized and systematized the learning developed by the
Yoshida family. This family served as hereditary priests in the important Yoshida and
Hirano Shrines located in Kyoto. Prior to 1387, the Yoshida family was known as the
Urabe family.
Beliefs:
According to Yoshida Kanetomo, special Shinto ideas had been transmitted specially in
the Yoshida lineage which, in turn, could be traced back to the original Shinto
beliefs. Kanetomo's form of Shintoism became most influential after the creation of
the Tokugawa shogunate in 1603 and remained so until the Meiji Restoration of 1868.
