Definition: Along with Brahama and Vishnu, Shiva is one of the three principle gods. Shiva is regarded as the "destroyer" god. Whereas Brahma creates and Vishnu maintains the world, Shiva is responsible for destroying the world and, thus, forcing the cycle of birth and death to begin again. Although at times Shiva is portrayed with a necklace of skulls to emphasize death, Shiva is not hated because it acknowledged that death and destruction are necessary parts of life.
