Definition: Shinto is an important religion in Japan which is based upon ancient traditions involving the veneration of kami and of a family's ancestors. The name Shinto comes form the Chinese shin tao, which means "the way of the gods." This name was first used some time in the 8th century in order to distinguish native beliefs and customs from the newly introduced traditions of Buddhism.
