Definition: Ramayana is the shorter of Hinduism's two great epics and is traditionally attributed to Valmiki, but scholars have shown that it is the result of multiple authors.
Consisting of about 20,000 stanzas, it is the story about the banishment of prince Rama from his kingdom, the abduction of his wife Sita by a demon, her eventual rescue, and finally Rama's eventual restoration to the throne.
