Definition: Mencius (371-289 BCE) was a Chinese philosopher who was devoted to getting the various rulers of warring Chinese states to adopt Confucian philosophy as the basis for their political thought. Mencius believed that if this were to happen, the violent conflicts would end and an era of peace and prosperity would be inaugurated. According to Meng, a genuinely moral ruler would receive the automatic support and approval of all people in all territories, leading to greater unity and national purpose.

The name Mencius is simply a Western Latinization of his Chinese title Meng-tzu, which means "Master Meng".
