Definition: The name Mara literally means "bringer of death" and, in Buddhism, the figure of Mara fills basically the same role as does Satan in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. According to Buddhist tradition, Mara holds the power over people to tempt them with the attractions of the world - samsara, or illusion. In this way, the Buddha's enlightenment is essentially a victory over the efforts of Mara and his minions.
