Definition:
The term "jathedar" literally means "captain" and it can be used to refer to the leader of any group of Sikhs. Most commonly, however, it is used as the title of a Sikh political leader. The "chief jathedar" is the highest ranking at Akal Takht and his religious decisions are treated as binding for Sikhs around the world.
