Definition: In Jain tradition, the Avashyaka are the six "obligatory actions" which every Jain adherent must practice. The first full exploration of them is not found until the 2nd century CE, in the Avashyaka Sutra. These obligations are:

  • samayika (equanimity - a form of meditation)
  • praise for the 24 tirthankara
  • vandana (homage - paid to an ascetic teacher)
  • pratikramana (turning back - confession and repentance for errors)
  • kayotsarga (abandonment - ascetic posture taken for temporary periods)
  • pratyakhyana (renunciation - abstinence from various substances and/or activities).
