Definition: Aditi is an abstract goddess in Vedic Hinduism whose name signifies "boundlessness" and is sometimes identified with the sky, the earth, or with a cow.

Rv. I, 98, 10 says that "Aditi is the sky; Aditi is the air; Aditi is all the gods and the five tribes; Aditi is whatever has been born; Aditi is whatever shall be born."

Aditi is the mother of the Aditiyas, a group of gods numbered sometimes at six, sometimes at eight, and in later times at twelve. Among them, Varuna is considered the most important and usually the others are regarded merely as manifestations of him. Their names of the original six are: Varuna, Mitra, Aryaman, Bhaga, Daksa and Amas. Later additions include: Dhatar, Indra, Vivasvant, Martanda, Surya and Vishnu.
