Definition:
Whereas modernism is characterized by the idea that humans and society can be perfected through the proper use of science, reason, and liberal democratic values, postmodernism is a self-conscious critique and rejection of that perspective. According to postmodernists, science and reason are not tools which transcend culture or politics. They are, instead, tools employed by European males for the purpose of political and cultural domination over other ethnic groups.

It must be remembered that, in art, many pieces and movements which are labeled "modern" in some fashion are only modern in the sense of chronology - that is to say, they are products of the "modern" age. In perspective and ideology, they are actually postmodernist. A good example of this distinction would be the art of Dada, because dadaists had no faith in the powers of reason or science to improve humanity, but Dada is considered a "modern" movement.

What is Aesthetics?
In philosophy, aesthetics is the study of beauty and taste, whether in the form of the comic, the tragic or the sublime. Aesthetics has traditionally been part of other philosophical pursuits like the investigation of epistemology or ethics. However, it started to come into its own and become a more independent pursuit under Immanuel Kant, the German philosopher who saw aesthetics as a unitary and self-sufficient type of human experience.
