Definition:
The label "Biedermeier" is applied to those works, mainly late 19th century German literary pieces,
which deliberately parody the ideals of
Classicism and
Romanticism,
restricting them to a
few characteristics of conservative, bourgeois life like a "love of details," and a glorification of a
simple, middle-class life. Both the term and style were first developed by Ludwig Eichrodt
(1827-1892).
