Antipope Eulalius was elected.

1831
Employed as ship's naturalist, Charles Darwin left England aboard The Beagle.

1899
Carry Nation, a leader of the American Christian temperance movement, raided and wrecked her first saloon in Medicine Lodge, Kansas.

1985
Palestinian terrorists killed 18 people and wounded over 100 in attacks near the counters of Israel's El Al Airline in the Rome and Vienna airports. Four of the terrorists were killed and three captured.

2002
Brigitte Boisselier, a chemist and CEO of Clonaid, held a press conference to announce that the previous day the first cloned human being had been born. Clonaid is a company created by the Raelian founder Claude Vorilhon.
