Pope John XII, just 18 years old, was elected pope on the orders of Duke Alberic II of Spoleto, ruler Rome and his father. John's reign lasted nine years, and it is believed that he died in the arms of his mistress.

1485
Catherine of Aragon, Spanish princess and the first wife of Henry VIII, was born. It was Henry's desire to divorce from Catherine that touched off the English Reformation.

1653
Oliver Cromwell became Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland.

1863
Spanish philosopher and humanist George Santayana was born.

1901
The American anthropologist Margaret Mead was born.

1925
The League of Nations sets the border between Turkey and Iraq, putting the Mosul region in Iraq rather than Turkey despite the wishes of the local Kurdish population.

1931
Pope Pius XI declared Albertus Magnus a saint and doctor of the church.

1996
The police investigation into the death of Lisa McPherson while in the care of the Church of Scientology becomes public. According to Scientologists, the Clearwater Police are harassing the church and McPherson checked herself voluntarily into the Fort Harrison hotel for "rest and relaxation" and "suddenly fell ill" for no apparent reason.
