In the Bull Quantum Praedecessores, Pope Eugene III proclaims the Second Crusade in an effort to retake territory once again coming under the control of Muslim forces. The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals would rule that there was no impermissible establishment of religion in creating a public holiday at the same time as the Christian holy day of Good Friday.

Argued: Mitchell v. Helms
The Supreme Court would decide to allow for educational materials and equipment to be given to religious schools, even if such equipment could be and is diverted for religious purposes - so long as this aid is granted to any religious or private school in an even-handed manner.

2005
In South Africa, the Constitutional Court rules that civil marriage cannot be limited solely to opposite-sex couples and so must be changed to legalize gay marriage.
