Pope Clement IV died, after which three years passed before a new pope could be elected.

1898
C. S. Lewis, noted author and Christian apologist, was born.

1905
Marcel Lefebvre is born in Tourcoing, France. Lefebvre would break with Rome following the Second Vatican Council and, over the years, consecrated hundreds of priests who agreed with his traditionalist views. This created the first schism in the Roman Catholic Church since 1870.

1947
UN Resolution 181 partitions western Palestine into a Jewish and an Arab state.

1950
Delegates from 25 Protestant denominations and 4 Eastern Orthodox churches establish the National Council of Churches in Cleveland, Ohio.

1974
After a wave of bombings, the British parliament outlawed the Irish Republican Army and granted the police broad new powers to act against terrorism and suspected terrorists.

2004
In South Korea, scientists announce that they have successfully treated a paralyzed woman's spinal cord injury by using stem cells.
