St. Hilarius was elected pope.

1278
680 Jews were arrested and 293 were hanged in England on charges of counterfeiting.

1959
Both Harvard and Yale Universities withdrew from federal student-loan programs in protest of the requirement that students who receive loans sign an anti-communist loyalty oath.

1971
Argued: Eisenstadt v. Baird
The right of people to have and know about contraceptives was expanded to unmarried couples because, according to the Court, the right of people to make such decisions exists due not simply to the nature of the marriage relationship.

1977
Egyptian President Anwar Sadat accepted an invitation to visit Israel.

1980
Argued: Stone v. Graham
The Court ruled that a Kentucky law requiring the posting of the Ten Commandments in each public school classroom in the state to be unconstitutional.

1997
In Luxor, Egypt, Muslim terrorists open fire on tourists from Switzerland, Germany, and Japan, killing sixty.

2000
Decided: Sechler v. State College Area School District
Jarrod Sechler, a "youth pastor" at a local Christian church, filed suit against the State College Area High School because their holiday program was insufficiently Christian for him. According to a U.S. District Court, the presence of non-Christian symbols did not advance either those religions or express hostility towards Christianity.
