The Third Council of Constantinople opened. It was convoked by Byzantine Emperor Constantine IV to deal with Monotheletism. The council was attended by more than 150 bishops from all over the world and presided over by papal legates.

1143
Count Fulk of Anjou, king of Jerusalem and leader of the Christian Crusaders in the Holy Land, dies after having been thrown from his horse three days earlier. Fulk's wife, Melisende, becomes regent.

1637
The Massachusetts Bay Colony tried and convicted Anne Hutchinson for heresy, sentencing her to be banished.

1793
During the French Revolution, a decree was issued which declared all church property at the disposal of the government - vast amounts would be sold.

1879
Leon Trotsky, Russian revolutionary, was born (Lev Davidovich Bronstein).

1903
Konrad Lorenz was born.

1913
French philosopher Albert Camus was born.

1918
Billy Graham was born.

1936
Reverend Charles E. Coughlin announces his retirement from radio and the end of his National Union for Social Justice, claiming that its utter failure to gain any real support in the national elections meant that it had been "thoroughly discredited."

1949
Pope Pius XII called upon all Catholic judges around the world to refuse to sentences based upon laws which are considered unjust under Catholic doctrine.

1950
The Chinese government announces that several thousand "volunteers" were already fighting in Korea on behalf of the North Korean government.

1984
Argued: Estate of Thornton v. Caldor
The Court ruled 8-1 that Connecticut's law requiring that employers give all employees the day off if it was their chosen day of worship was unconstitutional because it had a direct effect of advancing a particular religious practice.

2000
Judge Roy Moore was elected Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court.
