The Massachusetts Bay Colony passed a law permitting the death penalty for anyone who denied that the Bible was the Word of God.

Sigmund Freud's book Interpretation of Dreams was published. This initial run only included six hundred copies and eight years were required before they could all be sold.

John XXIII is crowned as the 262nd pope in ceremonies at St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome.

Colonel Abdel Salam Arif, one of the leaders of the Iraqi coup that occurred earlier in the year, is arrested by his co-conspirator Premier Kassim on charges of acting against the interests of Iraq.

Iranian militants took over the U.S. embassy in Tehran and seized 63 American hostages. Mostly students, the militants demanded the return of the shah in exchange for the hostages' release.
