Outraged over Mormon attacks on the state militia, members of the militia attacked Haun's Mill, a community of Mormon refugees. Eighteen men and boys were shot dead.
1902
Pope Leo XIII published "Vigilantiae," an apostolic letter that officially established the Pontifical Commission of Biblical Studies. Created to defend orthodox readings of Scripture against outside secular criticism, in 1904 the Commission was given the power to grant academic degrees.

Dr. Albert Schweitzer won the Nobel Prize for Peace.
1989
The Flag Protection Act, passed by Congress in response to the Supreme Court's decision in the case of Texas v Johnson, went into effect. Thousands of people burned flags in protest against the law and two, Shawn Eichman and Mark Haggerty, challenged their arrest and conviction under the law to the Supreme Court. In the case of United States v Eichman, the Supreme Court reaffirmed it's original decision against laws that banned burning or desecrating the American flag.
2001
Lawsuits were filed on behalf of three lawyers who sought the removal of Roy Moore's Ten Commandments monument from the Alabama Judicial Building. The suit claimed that the monument "constitutes an impermissible endorsement of religion by the state."
