Maria, daughter of Amalric II, former king of Jerusalem and Cyprus, marries John of Brienne, a friend of king Philip of France.

St. Francis of Assisi died.

Jews were expelled from Eger, Bohemia.

1692
In Massachusetts, Increase Mather published his "Cases of Conscience Concerning Evil Spirits," effectively ending the Salem Witch Trials which had begun earlier that year.

1875
Hebrew Union College was founded in Cincinnati, Ohio under the auspices of Rabbi Isaac Mayer Wise. It was the first Jewish college in America to train men to become rabbis.

1890
Volume Two of William James's famous Principles of Psychology was published.

1932
Iraq was created as independent state under the monarchy of Faisal I. As a condition for independence from British control, Iraq had to allow an RAF presence, give Britain land and resources, and coordinate foreign policy with the British government for the next 25 years.

2004
Pope John Paul II beatifies five people, including Anne Catherine Emmerich, a German nun, and Karl I, last emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This makes a total of 1,340 beatifications for him, more than all other popes combined.
