Pope Liberius died.

Death of Pippin III (Pippin the Short) at Saint Denis. Son of Charles Martel and father of Charlemagne, in 0759 Pippin captured Narbonne, the last Muslim stronghold in France, and thereby drove Islam out of France.

The Second Nicene Council opened under Pope Adrian I. The 7th of the church's 21 ecumenical councils, Nicea II condemned iconoclasm (that is to say, they voted to allow the veneration but not the worship of icons). This was the last of the seven church councils commonly accepted as authoritative by both Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches.

At the Synod of Worms, German King Henry IV declared that Gregory VII was no longer pope.

Pope Innocent II died.

Death of Manuel I Comnenus Megas, Byzantine Emperor. Manuel had let the armies of the Second Crusade pass through his lands on their way to Palestine, but during much of his reign he was at war with various European powers like the Normans and Venice. Manuel is succeeded by his son Alexius II, just eleven years old. Manuel's wife, Maria, is Latin by birth and greatly resented among the people, leading to an insurrection two years later.

A Papal Bull was issued by Pope Pius IX which reestablished the Roman Catholic hierarchy in England

The Taliban called for a jihad against the United States if American forces entered Afghanistan hunting for Osama bin Laden.

Nova Scotia becomes the 6th Canadian jurisdiction to legalize gay marriage when the Supreme Court strikes down a law forbidding same-sex marriages.

2006
Ramadan Begins: during this month, Muslims who are physically able do not drink or eat from dawn until sunset.
