Marcus Ulpius Trajan is born. Trajan was Emperor of Rome from 0098 to 0117 CE and was the third Roman emperor to engage in systematic persecution of the early Christian Church. During Trajan's reign, Ignatius of Antioch was martyred in 0117 CE.

1180
Death of French King Louis VII, one of the leaders of the Second Crusade.

1562
After a ten year suspension, the Council of Trent reconvened.

1765
Pope Gregory XVI was born.

1783
Leonhard Euler died in St. Petersburg, Russia.

1924
English idealist Francis Herbert Bradley died in Oxford.

1947
Marcel Lefebvre is consecrated as bishop. Lefebvre would break with Rome following the Second Vatican Council and, over the years, consecrated hundreds of priests who agreed with his traditionalist views. This created the first schism in the Roman Catholic Church since 1870.

1997
In downtown Cairo, Egypt, a bomb attack on a bus kills 10 people, mostly German tourists.
